PSILOCYBIN

Psilocybin is a naturally occurring psychedelic compound. Psilocybin mushrooms have a deep root of use in Mesoamerica in spiritual and religious rituals and are currently use as recreational psychedelics in the United States and Europe. It is estimated that there are more than 180 species of mushrooms that contain psilocybin, or its derivative psilocin.

Psilocybin mushrooms have been proved useful in therapeutic settings to treat a wide variety of disorders and ailments including anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorders, cluster headaches, depression, and addiction.

The dose for feeling the effects of psilocybin is typically within 0.2-0.5g range. However varies across individual users. A moderate dose of 1-2.5g taken orally produces a trip that lasts 3 to 6 hours.

Psilocybin is metabolized into psilocin, both are equally active in producing hallucinogenic effects. Psilocybin found in magic mushrooms is about 100 times less potent than LSD and 10 times less potent than mescaline.

A moderate dose of magic mushrooms for a standard trip is about (1-2.5g) expecting deeper introspection, increased intensity of emotional experiences, and altered psychological functioning in the form of “hypnagogic experiences” (a sort of transitory state between wakefulness and sleep). It has been described as a waking dream state, and research conducted in brain imaging studies show that a mushroom tripping is neurologically similar to dreaming.

Strong emotions can be experienced, both good and bad. It’s advised not to resist these emotions, but instead let them work their own way. Those who have reported strong negative emotions also felt a simultaneous sense of acceptance, calm and detachment especially remembering to themselves that those emotions are temporary.

Perceptual changes such as illusions, mixing sensory modalities, emotional changes, and a distorted sense of time are all characteristic of a mushroom. These effects are typically felt around 1 to 1.5 hours after ingesting the mushrooms.

Thoughts and emotions start to change as well. It’s common to have a sense of openness to feelings and thoughts you tend to avoid in your everyday life. A feeling of delight and wonder with the people in your life, the world around you and your thoughts is also quite common, along with a sense of connection and peace with the creation.

In trials where hallucinogens were provided to healthy adults many of them reported lasting beneficial changes in their behavior, their personality, and their attitudes and values. Also about 40% of participants in laboratory research of psilocybin reported long-term, positive changes in aesthetic experience and their relationship with nature.

mystical experience as “feelings of unity and interconnectedness with all people and things, a sense of sacredness, feelings of peace and joy, a sense of transcending normal time and space, ineffability, and an intuitive belief that the experience is a source of objective truth about the nature of reality.”

Recent research has revealed that psilocybin can be used to enhance spiritual practice – a  study recruited with 75 individuals engaging them on a 6-month long spiritual course consisting in meditation, awareness and self-reflection. Participants were given low or high dose of psilocybin. The participants given the high dose showed greater improvements in measures of spirituality such as interpersonal closeness, death transcendence, life meaning and forgiveness.
